Reno's eastern neighbor across the Truckee River — cheaper hotels, an outlet mall lake, and the Nugget's rib cook-off.

Sparks was a Southern Pacific Railroad company town in 1902 and grew into Reno's twin city — 108,000 people, separated from Reno by a line most locals ignore. Victorian Square in old Sparks (Victorian and 12th Street) is a redone plaza with fountains, a bandshell, and John Ascuaga's Nugget casino anchoring the north end. The Marina district around Sparks Marina Lake (a former gravel pit turned 77-acre swimming lake) is the newer draw — walking trails, paddleboard rentals, and a chain-restaurant row.

At 9pm Sparks feels quieter than Reno — the Nugget's casino is busy, the Alamo truck stop on East Lincoln Way is always on, and Great Basin Brewing on Victorian Ave stays open late. Suits budget travelers, families using the Marina lake, and anyone here for the Best in the West Rib Cook-off (Labor Day weekend, half a million people). Skip if you want walkable urban feel; this is car-dependent suburbia with occasional pockets of character.

Rail City is the old nickname, and it still shows on Pyramid Way and Prater Way — a strip of tire shops, taquerias, and the 1904 Southern Pacific depot now folded into the Sparks Heritage Museum at 820 Victorian Avenue. The industrial belt east toward the Tahoe-Reno corridor keeps Sparks blue-collar even as the Marina glosses over the gravel-pit past. Baldini's Sports Casino on Prater Way pulls a local crowd for keno and sports betting rather than tourists. This is a town built around a rail yard and a casino, not a resort strip, and it still feels that way after dark.

Families doing a week at the lake base near the Marina, where Disc Drive and Howard Drive loop past the swim beach and the outlet stores at Legends. Convention-goers land at the Nugget because its meeting floors sit under the same roof as the rooms. Road-trippers stop for one night off Interstate 80 and rarely see more than the truck stops on East Lincoln Way. Skip Sparks entirely if you're set on walking to dinner without a car — even Victorian Square empties out by 9pm and the Marina restaurants are a five-minute drive, not a walk, from most hotels.

Where to stay

The Nugget Casino Resort on Victorian Ave is the anchor — 1,600 rooms from $70 midweek, older wing is dated but the pool is huge. Nearby chains on East Lincoln Way run cheap ($55-80). For the Marina area, the Legends Bay Casino is the newest option, opened 2022, from $110. Skip anything on Prater Way east of Pyramid — motel row with reliability issues. Prices climb fast for the Rib Cook-off weekend and for Hot August Nights, when even the East Lincoln Way chains push past $150 a night; book eight weeks out if your dates land on either event. Outside those weekends, expect the Nugget's older tower to dip to $65-75 midweek in January and February, with the renovated wing running $30-40 higher. For a first stay, book Victorian Ave over Prater Way — you'll be walking distance to the Square instead of a drive from motel row.

The essentials

Victorian Square Loop (1.5 km)

Start at the Sparks Heritage Museum on Victorian Ave and Pyramid Way. Walk west through Victorian Square past the fountains and bandshell to the Nugget entrance, then back east along 12th Street through the redone rail cottages. Loop south on C Street and finish at Great Basin Brewing for a pint on the patio. Along the way the clock tower fountain marks the plaza's center and is the spot for the Rib Cook-off's main stage every Labor Day. The rail cottages on 12th Street date to the 1900s company-town build-out and are now mostly offices. Budget 25 minutes without stops, an hour with the museum and a pint.

Getting there & around

Reno-Tahoe International is 10 minutes south — $18 Uber, or RTC bus 11 with a transfer at 4th Street Station. From Reno downtown it's a 10-minute drive east on Interstate 80. RTC RIDE routes 11 and 26 connect Sparks to Reno for $2. The RAPID bus on Prater Way and Victorian Ave is faster with fewer stops. For the Marina and Legends Bay you'll want a car or short rideshare hop. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops at the Reno station downtown, about 15 minutes by car or a $12 rideshare from Victorian Square. Once in Sparks, Victorian Square and the Nugget are walkable to each other, but the Marina district is a separate 10-minute drive or a longer bus ride with a transfer at 4th Street Station. Parking is free and easy almost everywhere in Sparks, which is the main argument for renting a car over relying on RTC RIDE.
