Who Pahrump suits
Pahrump suits Death Valley National Park visitors (the eastern entrance at Death Valley Junction is 30 minutes west), Spring Mountains hikers coming from the west side, wine tourists (Pahrump Valley Winery and Sanders Family Winery are two of Nevada's few working wineries), and travellers who want casino-hotel comforts on the desert side of the mountains. The three casinos — Pahrump Nugget, Saddle West and Gold Town — are functional rather than glamorous. It is also the closest legal-brothel county to Vegas, which shapes some of the roadside signage but affects visitor experience less than you might expect.
Who should skip it
Skip Pahrump if you want a proper town centre — it is a spread-out desert grid with everything on Highway 160, and walking between places is not really a thing. Skip it if you want restaurant variety; the food scene is chains, casino cafés and a handful of independents. Skip it in July and August when the valley regularly hits 110°F and Death Valley is dangerous. Skip it as a Vegas alternative for anything other than a Death Valley base — the drive back into town over Mountain Springs Summit is 60-70 minutes and gets tedious on repeat.
What's within walking distance
Essentially nothing walkable between destinations. From Pahrump Nugget or Saddle West you can walk to a small cluster of restaurants and shops on Highway 160, but Pahrump Valley Winery is a 10-minute drive south, the Front Sight shooting facility is 15 minutes, and Death Valley is 30-45 minutes depending on entry point. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park on the Vegas side of the range is 45 minutes back over the pass. The town does have a genuinely dark sky and a small observatory (the Pahrump Valley Winery hosts occasional stargazing dinners) that Vegas-area travellers appreciate.

Is Pahrump a good Death Valley base?
For the east side (Zabriskie Point, Furnace Creek, Badwater) yes — 45 minutes to Furnace Creek versus 2 hours from Vegas. Furnace Creek Inn and Stovepipe Wells are in the park itself but limited and expensive; Pahrump saves money while adding a manageable drive.
Are Pahrump's wineries worth a visit?
Pahrump Valley Winery has a genuine tasting room, a good on-site restaurant (Symphony's) and desert-tolerant grape varieties. It is not Napa, but it is a working winery in an unlikely place and makes a pleasant afternoon stop.
