Boulder City suits Hoover Dam and Lake Mead visitors who want to be at the entrance gate at 9am when the queues are shortest, hikers doing the Historic Railroad Trail or River Mountains Loop, and travellers who genuinely dislike casino atmosphere. It is a small (population 15,000), quiet, walkable historic town built in 1931 to house dam workers — think early-20th-century downtown with antique shops, art galleries and diners. Rates run $110-$170 midweek, closer to Nevada's small-town average than to Vegas prices, and there are no resort fees anywhere.

Who should skip it

Skip Boulder City if you want nightlife of any kind — bars close by 10pm and the town is genuinely sleepy. Skip it if you gamble, since state law banned casinos here when the town was founded, and it has never been overturned. Skip it in July and August when afternoon temperatures on the dam and lake regularly hit 108°F and outdoor activity ends by 10am. The Boulder Dam Hotel (1933) is characterful but rooms are small and thin-walled; newer chain hotels on Highway 93 are more comfortable but less atmospheric.

What's within walking distance

From the Boulder Dam Hotel you can walk the entire historic downtown — Milo's Cellar for wine on the patio, the Coffee Cup Cafe for breakfast (Guy Fieri visited, and yes there is still a queue), the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum inside the hotel itself, and roughly 20 galleries and antique shops along Nevada Way and Arizona Street. Bicycle Bob's rents bikes for the Historic Railroad Trail, which starts a 10-minute walk away and runs 3.7 miles through five tunnels to a Lake Mead overlook. The dam itself is a 7-minute drive; no shuttle.
